I have 3 funeral dresses | Archived Poems

I have three funeral dresses.

My father’s was black
and white plaid,
with a large white
bib and a pink flower.

It fit until I was 13.

My coworker’s was
lavender – I had never
seen her wear black.

My ex-boyfriend’s was black,
with tiny red flowers.
It had long sleeves,
and a turtleneck.

I had originally bought it thinking
I would wear it on a date,
if I was ever asked on a date.

I have kept all of my funeral dresses
hanging up in my closet, hoping
I won’t need a fourth.

Note: Between 2010 and 2016 (ages 15-21) I had a blog in which I wrote poetry, or parts of poetry, or things that I thought sounded neat. I wrote growing up, moving out, grieving a friend, beginning to date, falling in love, and breaking up, among other things. I am disclosing select poems from the blog which I feel proud of. Please be empathetic to my 15-21 aged self who was finding her voice and her place.
